Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: amber n.2, seed n.
Etymology: < amber n.2 + seed n., so called on account of the odour resembling ambergris. Compare earlier ambrette n. and musk seed n. at musk n. Compounds 5a.
The fragrant seeds of the musk okra, Abelmoschus moschatus, used as a flavouring and in perfumery. Also called ambrette, musk seed.
