Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French alphabétique; Latin alphabeticus.
Etymology: < (i) French alphabétique arranged in alphabetical order (15th cent. in Middle French), relating to the alphabet (1542), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin alphabeticus (a1513; perhaps earlier as a variant reading for alphabetites in a manuscript of Jerome (4th–5th cent.)) < alphabetum alphabet n. + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix. Compare Catalan alfabètic (1803), Spanish alfabético (1527), Portuguese alfabético (1712), Italian alfabetico (1598 in Florio). Compare earlier alphabet n., alphabetical adj.Compare also Dutch alfabetisch (1717 as alfabetisch), German alphabetisch (1536 or earlier), Swedish alfabetisk (1729 as alphabetisk), Danish alfabetisk (1747).
