Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: in bank at bank n.² 2, French en banc.

Etymology: Apparently an alteration of in bank at bank n.² 2 after French en in and either French banc bench (see bank n.²) or perhaps English banc, medieval variant of bank n.² Compare earlier in banco adv. and in banc adv. Compare Anglo-Norman en banc in court, holding judicial session (14th cent. or earlier with reference to the English legal system). Compare also French en banc, lit. ‘on the bench’ (1812 or earlier in legal use). The form en banque probably shows remodelling after French banque, although this does not denote the bench of the judiciary (see bank n.³ and compare bank n.²).
