Origin: Probably a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: French émaillé , -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < Middle French, French émaillé enamelled (1353 as esmaillié ), (of nature, especially vegetation) vibrantly coloured, colourful (a1577), use as adjective of past participle of esmailler , esmaillier (13th cent. in Old French: see amel v.; compare email n.1), with substitution of -ed suffix1 for the ending. With quot. 1480 compare perhaps esmail heraldic device worn on clothing (1456, specific use of esmail enamel: see amel n.). Compare later email n.1, and also amelled adj., enamelled adj.Compare also Middle French enmailler to catch in a net (a1160 in Old French), to cover in chain mail (1482; French emmailler ) < en- en- prefix1 + maille link of chain mail, meshwork fabric (see mail n.3).
Now rare.
