† elmawesn.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain and disputed. It has been suggested that the word is < elf n.1 + a variant of may n.3, with phonological simplification of the medial consonant group; compare Old Danish elfuermø elf maiden (Danish ellemø ). If this were the case, the second element may have been influenced in form by mowe n.The meaning of the Latin word translated is uncertain, but it may be a transmission error for lemures , nominative plural (see lemur n.); in the manuscript this lemma is apparently also glossed in Latin as lamia lamia n., which suggests reference to a kind of supernatural being.
