Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin empyreus , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin empyreus, empyrius (of demons) fiery (4th cent.), belonging to the empyrean or highest heaven (5th cent. in Augustine; frequently from 13th cent. in British sources; < Byzantine Greek ἐμπύριος belonging to the empyrean or highest heaven < ancient Greek ἐμπύρος fiery (see empyrical adj.) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives) + -al suffix1. Compare empyrean adj. and earlier empyre adj.Compare imperial adj. and β. forms at that entry. The α. forms may partly result from association with imperial adj. (although compare also im- prefix1). It is sometimes difficult to distinguish the two words.
