Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin emprosthotonos.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin emprosthotonos (5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek ἐμπροσθότονος drawn forward and stiffened < ancient Greek ἔμπροσθεν before ( < ἐμ- , variant (before a labial) of ἐν- en- prefix2 + πρόσθεν before, in front: see prosthaphaeresis n.) + τόνος stretching, tension (see tone n.). Compare Middle French emprosthotonos (1552 or earlier). Compare opisthotonos n.In the plural form emprosthotonoi after the Greek plural form. In the form eprocostenus in quot. a1398 after the form eprocostenus in the Latin original, which appears to show a transmission error.
Medicine.
Sustained muscular spasm causing the body to arch forwards, with the head approaching the chest, sometimes occurring in tetanus, certain types of poisoning, etc.; an instance of this. Cf. episthotonos n., opisthotonos n.In extended use in quot. 1973.
