Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aloignier.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French aloignier, Anglo-Norman and Middle French aloigner, alloigner, Anglo-Norman aloiner to take (something) away (c1145), to defer, postpone (something) (c1160) < a- a- prefix5 + loign , loin , loing , etc. (adverb) far, far off, far away, remote (see purloin v.). Compare Old Occitan alonhar to take away.
Obsolete (archaic and rare after early 16th cent.).
transitive. To move (something) away; to take away, alienate; to position far away. Also with away.In quot. a13252: to postpone.
