Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French élinvar.
Etymology: < French élinvar (C. E. Guillaume 1920, in Compt. rend. hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 171 83), shortened < élasticité invariable invariable elasticity (1920 in Guillaume's paper, or earlier; < élasticité elasticity n. + invariable invariable adj.), with reference to the salient property of the alloy. Compare earlier Invar n.
Any of a series of alloys, consisting typically of iron and nickel with some chromium, which have a constant modulus of elasticity over a wide temperature range.Such alloys are used esp. to make springs for mechanical timepieces, their mechanical properties being little affected by changes in ambient temperature.A proprietary name in the United Kingdom.
