Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: endo- prefix and comb. form, Greek ἔργον , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < endo- prefix and comb. form + ancient Greek ἔργον work (see erg n.1) + -ic suffix. Compare exergonic adj.
Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Of a chemical or metabolic process: requiring the supply of energy, the products having a greater free energy than the reactants. Contrasted with exergonic. Cf. endothermic adj.
