Etymology: Originally < German Aloine (D. Meisner 1822, in Neues Jrnl. der Pharm. 6 i. 296) < Aloe aloe n. + -ine -ine suffix⁵. In later use apparently independently re-formed < aloe n. + -in suffix¹; compare quot. 1851.

Chemistry.

Any of several organic compounds isolated from the sap of aloes; (in later use) spec. an anthraquinone which forms bitter-tasting lemon-yellow crystals and has purgative and cathartic effects.Chemical name: 10-glucopyranosyl-1,8-dihydroxy-3-(hydroxymethyl)-9-(10H)-anthracenone; C₂₁H₂₂O₉.

1922 J. J. Sudborough Bernthsen's Text-bk. Org. Chem. (new ed.) liv. 815 Certain derivatives of aloin, the active principal of aloes, have been prepared and used, e.g. the condensation product of aloin with formaldehyde, and tribromoaloin and triacetylaloin.

1949 Amer. Jrnl. Med. 6 238/1 The cathartic pills, containing aloin, strychnine and belladona,..and those containing in addition resin of podophyllum and extract of cascara..were the chief offenders [in causing strychnine poisoning].

2005 Femina (S. Afr.) Feb. 101 The high content of aloin (the bitterness) helps regeneration and healing.
