Forms: 1500s–1700s eglog(ue, (1500s, 1800s æglogue, ægloge), 1500s– eclogue.
Etymology: < Latin ecloga, < Greek ἐκλογή selection, < ἐκλέγειν to select. The spelling æglogue (medieval Latin aegloga, French églogue) was associated with a fanciful derivation < αἴξ, αἰγός goat (as if ‘discourse of goatherds’).
