Etymology: < Greek ἔκλειψις, noun of action < ἐκλείπειν to leave out; in sense 1 perhaps confused with ellipsis ; in sense 2 apparently suggested by eclipse n. in figurative sense ‘to obscure’.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: eˈclipsis.
