Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin almuten.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin almuten (1532 or earlier; also almuthen (1580 or earlier)), apparently ultimately < Arabic al-muʿtazz ( < al the + muʿtazz powerful, proud, passive participle of ʿazza to be powerful), with unexplained alteration of the ending; compare similarly Spanish †almuten (1594 or earlier). With the β. forms compare post-classical Latin almutez, almutes (both 16th cent.), Old French almutaz, Middle French almutes (c1270 in Old French, subsequently 1461; < Arabic al-muʿtazz), and perhaps also Spanish †almubtez (a1260), †almuntez (a1428 in an apparently isolated attestation), although this may show a different origin.

Astrology. Now rare.
