Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin echinodermata.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin echinodermata, plural of echinoderma , spiny-skinned marine animal, sea urchin ( J. T. Klein Naturalis dispositio Echinodermatum (1734) 9) < classical Latin echino- echino- comb. form + derma derma n. Compare Echinoderma n.Compare:1910 Encycl. Brit. VIII. 871/2 (note) [Echinoderma is] sometimes called ‘Echinodermata’, a Greek name meaning ‘sea-urchin-skins’, which was invented by J. T. Klein (1734) to denote the tests of the Echini or sea-urchins; its later use for the animals themselves, or for the whole phylum, was an error in both history and etymology.

Also with plural agreement (also in form echinodermata): animals of this group (collectively or individually); echinoderms.The Echinodermata have a rich fossil history, and as deuterostomes, constitute a sister group to the chordates. They were formerly regarded as a class of the division Radiata or of the subkingdom Annuloida.
