Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Echinacea.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Echinacea, genus name ( C. Moench Methodus Plantas Horti Botanici et Agri Marburgensis (1794) 591) < ancient Greek ἐχῖνος hedgehog (see echino- comb. form), with reference to the centre of the flower which appears to consist of soft spines + scientific Latin -acea -acea suffix.
1. Any plant of the genus Echinacea (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)), comprising perennial herbs native to the eastern United States and cultivated elsewhere as ornamentals and for medicinal purposes, and having flowers with a raised, cone-shaped centre and reflexed outer ray petals, typically purple, pink, or yellow. Also (in form Echinacea): the genus itself. Cf. purple coneflower n. at purple adj. and n. Compounds 1b(b).
