单词 el nath
释义

El Nathn.

Brit. /ˌɛl ˈnaθ/, U.S. /ˈɛl ˈnæθ/
Forms:

α. late Middle English 1600s 1800s– Alnath, 1800s– El Nath, 1800s– Elnath.

β. 1500s Aluathay (transmission error), 1600s Alnathay.

γ. 1800s– Nath.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Arabic al-naṭḥ; Arabic al-nāṭiḥ; Latin Nath.
Etymology: In sense 1 partly < Arabic al-naṭḥ ( < al the + naṭḥ , denoting the star α Arietis and also the first mansion of the moon (see below), specific use of naṭḥ push, thrust, act of butting < naṭaḥa to butt, to aim at with the horns), and partly < Arabic al-nāṭiḥ ( < al the + nāṭiḥ , denoting the star β Arietis (and occasionally also the star α Arietis), specific use of nāṭiḥ that which butts, person who butts, active participle of naṭaḥa to butt, to aim at with the horns). Compare Spanish Alnath (1256), post-classical Latin Alnath (1533 in the passage translated in quot. 1651 at sense 1, or earlier), Middle French, French Alnath (1587 or earlier), all denoting the star α Arietis. In sense 2 < post-classical Latin Nath ( G. Piazzi Praecipuarum stellarum inerrantium positiones mediae ineunte saeculo XIX (1814) 35) < Arabic naṭḥ (see above), which was not used to denote β Tauri. Piazzi apparently took the name from T. Hyde Tabulae longitudinis et latitudinis stellarum fixarum ex observatione Ulugh Beighi (1665) 30, an edition and commentary of the astronomical tables of the 15th-cent. Persian astronomer Ulugh Beg; Hyde notes that the Arabic glossator of Ulugh Beg's tables calls α Arietis both nāṭiḥ and, less frequently, naṭḥ . Later forms (in al- , el- ) in sense 2 show alteration after the name of α Arietis. The first mansion of the moon (the ‘horns’ mentioned in quots. 1616, 1651 at sense 1) comprised α and β Arietis, which were collectively known to Arab astronomers as al-šaraṭān , lit. ‘the two signs’, or qarnāhu , lit. ‘its (i.e. Aries') two horns’, designations formed with dual nouns. The β. forms probably ultimately reflect a similarly motivated Arabic name for the first mansion of the moon, al-nāṭḥay, lit. ‘the two nath s’ < al the + nāṭḥay , non-classical variant (frequent e.g. in Spanish Arabic sources) of classical nāṭḥayn , dual of nāṭḥ . The proximate sources of the β. forms are Middle French Alnathay (1556 in the passage translated in quot. ?1562 at sense 1, or earlier) and post-classical Latin Alnathay (1542 in the passage translated in quot. ?1562 at sense 1, or earlier). In γ. forms < post-classical Latin Nath.
