单词 el dorado
释义

El Doradon.

Brit. /ˌɛl dəˈrɑːdəʊ/, U.S. /ˌɛl dəˈrɑdoʊ/, /ˌɛl dəˈrædoʊ/
Forms: also as one word and with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish El Dorado.
Etymology: < Spanish El Dorado, the name of a fabled country or city in South America believed to abound in gold (16th cent.: see note) < el the + dorado , use as noun of dorado golden (see dorado n.).In Spanish, the principal form of the name is Dorado , with the definite article often functioning along normal grammatical lines (e.g. in del Dorado ʻof El Doradoʼ) and in early use also written with a lower case initial (as el Dorado ); compare early modern English the Dorado and Dorado , denoting the fabled region (both in the source of quot. 1596, which is the earliest evidence for the name in an English context). The Spanish name was apparently initially used as an epithet for a ruler of this region (mid 16th cent.), which subsequently became perceived as a place name, probably via expressions such as las tierras del Dorado the lands of the Dorado (second half of the 16th cent.). The country or city was believed to exist somewhere in the region of the Orinoco and Amazon rivers.1596 W. Raleigh Discoverie Guiana (new ed.) 31 Allured by those Croissants and Images of gold which he brought with him to trade, as also by the ancient fame and magnificence of El Dorado.
A place of great abundance or opportunity, esp. one that is widely but vainly sought for. Cf. Shangri-La n.
