单词 effectuous
释义

effectuousadj.

Brit. /ᵻˈfɛktʃʊəs/, /ᵻˈfɛktjʊəs/, U.S. /əˈfɛk(t)ʃəwəs/, /iˈfɛk(t)ʃəwəs/
Forms: late Middle English effectuos, late Middle English effectuose, late Middle English–1600s 1800s– effectuous, 1500s effectious, 1500s effectuouse, 1500s effectuus, 1600s affectuous; Scottish pre-1700 effecteous, pre-1700 effectous, pre-1700 effectuis, pre-1700 effectuise, pre-1700 effectuos, pre-1700 effectuous, pre-1700 effectuousse, pre-1700 effectuus.
Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: effectual adj.; Latin effectuosus.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration of effectual adj. after words in -ous suffix or -uous suffix. With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin effectuosus (of a medicine) effective (in an apparently isolated attestation, of uncertain date), French †effectueux (1611). In sense 2 apparently after, or perhaps independently borrowed < post-classical Latin effectuosus earnest, heartfelt (apparently only attested c1446 in a British source, but compare earlier effectuose , adverb: see effectuously adv.); compare earlier effectuously adv. 1. In forms effectious , effecteous apparently after words in -ious suffix, -eous suffix. Compare γ. forms at effectuously adv., and also affectious adj. The form effectous could alternatively be explained as showing a parallel formation < effect n. + -ous suffix; compare α. forms at effectuously adv. With sense 2 compare affectuous adj., and discussion at effectual adj. With the form affectuous in other senses compare discussion at effect n.
1. That produces its intended effect; = effectual adj. 2a. Now rare.
