Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: elegy n., -ist suffix, enthusiast n.
Etymology: Irregularly < elegy n. + -ist suffix, after elegiac adj., elegiacal adj., on the model of agent nouns in -ast (as e.g. Ecclesiast n., enthusiast n., etc.). Compare later elegist n.
A writer of elegies; an elegist.
