Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps ultimately < the name of Alicante (see Alicant n.; compare Catalan Alacant and the variant form alegant at that entry), with remodelling by association with elegant adj.The entry in the quot. occurs in a list of dried fruits and nuts of foreign origin; given that raisins were historically imported from the Alicante region and that the immediately preceding entry is for ‘raisins of sun’, the word may denote raisins from Alicante.
