Etymology: < easse n. + worm n.In the forms eastworm and easterworm apparently with folk-etymological remodelling after east adv. and easter adj. (or eastern adj.); compare:1933 Amer. Speech 8 14 In Rhode Island, three..informants offered the variants eastworm, easterworm, adding by way of explanation, ‘These worms come out when the east wind blows’.
U.S. regional (chiefly Rhode Island). Now somewhat rare.
An earthworm used as bait.
