Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin Amphictyones; Greek Ἀμϕικτύονες, Ἀμϕικτίονες.

Etymology: < (i) classical Latin Amphictyones (plural), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek Ἀμϕικτύονες (plural), also Ἀμϕικτίονες (probably the earlier form) association of cities situated round a sanctuary, especially that of Delphi, literally ‘they that dwell round or near, next neighbours’ < ἀμϕι- amphi- prefix + the stem of κτίζειν to found, build, also to live (see Protoctista n.) + -ων , suffix forming nouns.
