单词 edition
释义

editionn.

Brit. /ᵻˈdɪʃn/, U.S. /əˈdɪʃən/, /iˈdɪʃən/
Forms: late Middle English–1600s edicion, 1500s editioun (Scottish), 1500s edycion, 1500s edycyon, 1500s–1600s edytion, 1500s– edition.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ēditiōn-, ēditiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin ēditiōn-, ēditiō action of bringing into existence, publication (of books, writings), published version of a work, statement < ēdit- , past participial stem of ēdere to put forth, publish (see edit v.) + -iō -ion suffix1.Compare Middle French edicion, edition, French édition (1546 or earlier), Spanish edición (late 14th cent.), Portuguese edição (1666), Italian edizione (1575), and also Dutch editie (1546), German Edition (1537).
I. A form or version of a published work, and extended senses.
1.
a. A particular form or version of a book or other published text issued at one time, e.g. at its first publication or subsequently following revision, enlargement, abridgement, or change of format; the total number of such forms or versions issued at one time. Frequently with modifying word.Edition traditionally denoted texts printed from the same setting of type, before advances in printing technology from the 19th century onwards made it possible to produce identical reprints at a later time without having to set type manually. N.E.D. (1891) noted that edition might be used to refer to what is now distinguished by the term impression (see impression n. 3d): ‘it is awkward to speak of, e.g. “the second edition of Campbell's edition of Plato's Theætetus”; but existing usage affords no satisfactory substitute for this inconvenient mode of expression.’See also first edition n., library edition n., pocket edition, railway edition n., scholarly edition n., etc.
