Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian amatorio.
Etymology: < Italian amatorio, adjective (see amatory adj.), used to designate a decorated piece of ceramics intended as a love gift (1881 or earlier with reference to a plate; compare the phrase piatto amatorio plate intended as a love gift, cited in quot. 1869, but apparently only attested from the first half of the 20th cent. in Italian). Compare (with the feminine form of the adjective) Italian coppa amatoria cup intended as a love gift (1859 or earlier).
Ceramics. Obsolete. rare.
A decorated ceramic object intended as a love gift; spec. a piece of majolica painted with the portrait of a lady and bearing a complimentary inscription. Cf. bacile amatore at bacile n.
