Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ēlectrum.
Etymology: < classical Latin ēlectrum amber, also an alloy of gold and silver (see electrum n.), in post-classical Latin also lupin (11th cent. in British sources; compare quot. OE1 at sense 1). With sense 2 compare Old French electre amber (a1150), Anglo-Norman and Old French electre electrum (c1200 or earlier), Italian elettro amber, electrum (a1333). Compare electrum n.The use as plant name probably derives from the yellow colour of the flowers. With the form electar in sense 3 compare ambar (variant of amber n.2), nectar n., and -ar suffix1, -ar suffix3.
Obsolete.
