Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French abasie.
Etymology: < French abasie (P. Blocq 1888, in Arch. de neurol. 15 24; < a- a- prefix6 + ancient Greek βάσις step, stepping (see base n.1) + French -ie -ia suffix1, after astasie astasia n.), with remodelling of the ending after -ia suffix1. Compare earlier astasia n. 2.
Medicine.
An inability to walk, esp. in an individual who has no demonstrable sensory impairment or motor weakness; an instance of this. Cf. astasia n. 2.Frequently in astasia-abasia: see astasia n.
