Etymology: < earth n.1 + shaking adj. In sense 1 after various Latin and Greek epithets of Neptune (Poseidon), e.g. classical Latin Ennosigaeus (compare quot. 1687) and its etymon ancient Greek ἐννοσίγαιος, and also ancient Greek ἐνοσίχθων (compare quot. 1718); compare slightly earlier earth-shaker n. Compare also slightly earlier earthquaking adj. With sense 2 compare earlier earth-moving adj.
