Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: earth n.1, shaker n.
Etymology: < earth n.1 + shaker n., after various Latin and Greek epithets of Neptune (Poseidon), e.g. classical Latin Ennosigaeus (compare quot. 1647) and its etymon ancient Greek ἐννοσίγαιος, and also ancient Greek ἐνοσίχθων (compare quot. 1932). Compare earth-shaking adj.In quot. 1580 after post-classical Latin terriquassor, lit. ‘earth-shaker’ and tellurimotor, lit. ‘earth mover’, both used in early modern sources (1548 or earlier) to gloss ancient Greek epithets of Neptune, including ἐννοσίγαιος and ἐνοσίχθων (compare above and also discussion at earth-shaking adj.).
