单词 amapondo
释义

Amapondon.adj.

Brit. /ˌaməˈpɒndəʊ/, U.S. /ˌæməˈpɑndoʊ/, South African English /ˌʌməˈpɒndəʊ/
Inflections: Plural Amapondos.
Forms:

α. 1800s Amaponda, 1800s– Amapondo, 1900s– AmaPondo.

β. 1800s– Amampondo, 1900s– AmaMpondo, 1900s– AmamPondo (nonstandard).

Origin: A borrowing from Xhosa. Etymon: Xhosa amaMpondo.
Etymology: < Xhosa amaMpondo < ama-, plural class prefix denoting people + -Mpondo, self-designation ( < the name of Mpondo, the (perhaps legendary) founding leader of this people). The Xhosa etymon is a plural form (singular iMpondo or umMpondo Pondo person); English use as singular, and hence plural forms with -s , are secondary developments. The α. forms appear to have developed in English, probably by dissimilation.
