Origin: A borrowing from Xhosa. Etymon: Xhosa amaMfengu.

Etymology: < Xhosa amaMfengu < ama- , plural class prefix denoting people + -mfengu (see Mfengu n.). Compare earlier Fingo n.The singular forms in Xhosa are umMfengu or iMfengu Mfengu person. The forms ama-Fengu and Amafengu appear to have developed within English, probably by dissimilation.

A Xhosa-speaking people of south-eastern Africa descended from several refugee groups displaced during the Mfecane (see Mfecane n.), which settled in the Eastern Cape and southern Transkei during the 1830s. Cf. Mfengu n., Fingo n.
