A wire that provides an electrical connection to the ground.The purpose of an earth wire may be to protect against accidental electric shock (by providing a route for current that would otherwise pass through a person), or against possible damage (by limiting the increase in voltage that can occur in a device). In some situations, such as telegraphy, an earth wire functions as one of the conductors (cf. earth return n. 1).
