单词 almose
释义

almosen.

Forms: Middle English allmose, Middle English–1500s almosse, Middle English elemose, Middle English–1600s almos, Middle English–1600s almose, 1500s almoise, 1500s allmos, 1500s almoys, 1500s almoyse; Scottish pre-1700 alimos, pre-1700 almois, pre-1700 almos, pre-1700 almose.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: alms n.; almous n.
Etymology: Alteration of alms n. (or in some instances perhaps of almous n.) after either its ultimate etymon post-classical Latin elimosina or the related Anglo-Norman almosne , almoisne (see alms n.).It is possible that some early examples may instead show variants of almous n. rather than forms remodelled after Latin or Anglo-Norman. Conversely some later regional examples at almous n. may instead show reflexes of this word. Use as mass noun or count noun varies, as also for alms n. (and almous n.).
Obsolete.
= alms n. (in various senses).Recorded earliest in almose deed (see Compounds).
