Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch oorrinc (Dutch oorring ), Old Saxon ōrhring (Middle Low German ōrrinc ), Old High German ōrring (Middle High German ōrrinc , German Ohrring ) < the Germanic base of ear n.1 + the Germanic base of ring n.1The existence of an (unattested) Gothic cognate is probably implied by the Old Church Slavonic loanword useręzĭ earring.
1. Originally: a ring, often of gold, inserted through a hole in the earlobe and worn for ornament. Later also more generally: any piece of jewellery worn on the lobe or edge of the ear, often featuring precious stones or some other decorative pendant. Cf. drop-earring n. at drop n.
