Etymology: < empath- (in empathy n.) + -ist suffix.
1. Chiefly Psychology and Philosophy. An advocate or adherent of a theory involving empathy; spec. (usually with capital initial) a member of a group of philosophers, prominent in the early twentieth cent., who proposed an empathetic basis for human aesthetic response and appreciation. Cf. empathy n. 2.
