Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: empathic adj.
Etymology: Alteration of empathic adj., after apathetic adj., sympathetic adj., etc.The paper referred to in quot. 1912 is M. Geiger ‘Über das Wesen und die Bedeutung der Einfühlung’, in Bericht über den IV. Kongress für experimentelle Psychologie in Innsbruck (1911) 29–83; it does not use a German adjective formed on einfühlen to empathize (1903 or earlier; < ein- in- prefix1 + fühlen feel v.). The form empathetic occurs in occasional (unrelated) earlier use with the sense ‘emphatic’. See note at empathic adj.
