Etymology: Found in 14th cent.: perhaps a modification of dash v., expressing the same kind of action with a suggestion of more muffled sound: compare crash v., crush v.But there are similar continental words, as German dialect duschen, düschen, dussen, to beat, strike, knock, box (see Grimm, s.v. Dusen2); East Frisian dössen to beat, etc. Compare Douse.
Obsolete exc. Scottish.
