Etymology: < abash v. + -ed suffix1. Compare Anglo-Norman abay , esbay and Middle French esbahi terrified (c1275), amazed (13th cent.), stupefied (c1373). Compare bashed adj.1With the construction in for pure abashed compare occasional other examples of for pure with a past participle, e.g.:c1450 (c1385) G. Chaucer Troilus & Criseyde (Harl. 2280) (1881) ii. l. 656 With þat thought for pure ashamed she Gan in hire hed to pulle.
Feeling or caused to feel discomfited or disconcerted, esp. as a result of a sudden sense of shame or embarrassment. Cf. abash v.for pure abashed (see quot. a1393): (apparently) for sheer surprise.
