Etymology: < Old Icelandic dvergar, plural of dvergr dwarf n. Compare Old Swedish dværgher (Swedish dvärg, †dverg, †dwerg, plural dvärgar, †dverger, †dwerger), Old Danish dwerigh (Danish dværg, †dverg, plural dværge, (now regional: Jutland) dværger).Plurals in -s show double marking of the plural, resulting from reanalysis of forms in -r as singular. In the singular form dwergur probably after modern Icelandic dvergur, singular.
In (esp. Scandinavian) folklore and mythology: (with plural agreement, frequently with the) dwarves or similar supernatural beings as a class or race (see dwarf n. 3). Also later as a count noun: a dwarf.
