Etymology: < Italian duello duel n.The β. forms probably reflect uncertainty about the quality of unstressed final vowels in Romance loanwords; compare discussion at -ado suffix. The following quot. appears to show isolated earlier borrowing of post-classical Latin in duello (in the canon De clericis pugnantibus in duello ‘Of clerics who fight in a duel’: 13th cent. in Quinque libri Decretalium 5. 14, or earlier):1593 R.
