Origin: Probably formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: doodle n.
Etymology: Probably shortened < doodle n., perhaps with allusion to Yankee Doodle Dandy (see Yankee Doodle n.).The word was apparently popularized in New York early in 1883. N.E.D. (1897) notes that it was associated with the Aesthetic Movement (compare aesthetic adj. 3).
