单词 electrophorus
释义

electrophorusn.

Brit. /ᵻˌlɛkˈtrɒf(ə)rəs/, /ˌɛlɛkˈtrɒf(ə)rəs/, /ˌɛlɪkˈtrɒf(ə)rəs/, /ˌɪlɛkˈtrɒf(ə)rəs/, /ˌiːlɛkˈtrɒf(ə)rəs/, U.S. /əˌlɛkˈtrɑf(ə)rəs/, /iˌlɛkˈtrɑf(ə)rəs/
Inflections: Plural electrophori.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin electrophorus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin electrophorus (apparently coined by Volta c1775 (compare quot. 1776), although the device itself was apparently earlier described by J. Wilcke) < electro- electro- comb. form + ancient Greek -ϕόρος -phore comb. form. Compare French électrophore (1776, earliest in électrophore perpétuel ), Italian elettroforo (a1798), and also medieval Greek ἠλεκτροϕόρος amber-bearing. Compare electrophore n.
A simple instrument for generating static electricity by induction. The electrophorus consists of a metal plate with an insulating handle, and a separate plate of a dielectric (insulating) material. The dielectric plate is given an electric charge by rubbing it. The metal plate is then placed on top of it, so that the metal's two surfaces become oppositely charged. The side of the metal plate not touching the dielectric plate is momentarily earthed (so that the charge on that side escapes), and the metal plate is then withdrawn, bearing charge of one kind only.
