Etymology: < French abas (a1677 in the passage translated in quot. 1677), probably < Persian ḥabba ( < Arabic ḥabba seed, grain, berry, kernel, singular form corresponding to ḥabb (collective) seeds, grains, granules) + French -s , plural ending, subsequently reinterpreted as part of the word stem. Compare Dutch abas (1682 as plural in the passage translated in quot. 1704). In later use often associated with the name of Shah Abbas I (Persian ‘Abbas : see abbasi n.).

Now rare.

A measure of weight for pearls, formerly used in Persia (now Iran) and typically equal to seven-eighths of a carat.
