Forms: 1600s dubeties (plural), 1800s deputtah, 1800s doputta, 1900s– dopatta, 1900s– dupattá, 1900s– dupatta.
Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi dupaṭṭā.
Etymology: < Hindi dupaṭṭā, lit. ‘consisting of two strips’ < du- two + paṭṭā piece or strip (of cloth) < Sanskrit paṭṭa (see puttee n.).
South Asian.
A doubled or two-layered length of cloth worn by women as a scarf, veil, or shoulder wrap.
