Etymology: < Old French ducheé, later duché, feminine (12th cent. ducheté , duceé in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), and later Old French duché masculine. The former represents a Latin type *ducitāt-em dukeship; the latter is = Provençal ducat , Italian ducato , Spanish ducado < late Latin ducātus territory of a duke; < Latin dux , duc-em leader, duke n.
