Etymology: < the name of the town of Dubna near Moscow in Russia, site of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research where dubnium was created + -ium suffix.
1. (A name proposed for) an artificially produced transuranic chemical element, atomic number 104 (now called rutherfordium). Now disused.

1994 San Francisco Chron. (Nexis) 11 Oct. a19 Ghiorso and Seaborg have nothing against Rutherford, said Ghiorso, pointing out that he was the one who suggested the name rutherfordium for Element 104, which is renamed dubnium in the new suggested list.
1995 Sci. Amer. Mar. 13/2 Number 104 was previously known as rutherfordium, except by some Russian scientists who referred to it as kurchatovium. Now the recommended name is dubnium.
2011 J. Keats Virtual Words i. 6 The IUPEC [sic] proposed that element 104 be named dubnium after Dubna... For three more years the parties quarreled, finally agreeing that element 104 should be called rutherfordium.
2. A radioactive transuranic chemical element, atomic number 105, produced artificially. Symbol Db.Previously given the provisional name unnilpentium: see un- comb. form. Formerly called hahnium and nielsbohrium. The name joliotium was also proposed.
