amongstprep. Etymology: < among prep. + -s suffix1. With the development of excrescent final -t (probably reinforced by association with superlatives in -st ) compare against prep., alongst prep., amidst adv., betwixt prep., etc. Compare 'mongst prep. and emonges prep.In the early 21st cent. less common than among prep. in most uses, especially in U.S. English.
