The Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, which forms a major part of the normal flora of the intestinal tract of humans and many other vertebrates, but also has pathogenic strains that cause (chiefly) urinary tract infections and various forms of enteritis, including a severe type of food poisoning. Also (in extended use): disease (esp. food poisoning) caused by this organism. Cf. coli n.In scientific use the correct form is E. coli, in italics.
