Etymology: < post-classical Latin abaptiston (1582 or earlier) or its etymon ancient Greek ἀβάπτιστον, neuter of ἀβάπτιστος not immersed, in Hellenistic Greek designating a trepan (Galen) < ἀ- a- prefix6 + βαπτίζειν baptize v. + -τος, suffix forming verbal adjectives.The current plural form reflects the Latin or Greek plural forms; the (singular) variant abaptista shows reinterpretation of these plural forms as singular (compare a similar development in the β. forms at phenomenon n.).

Any of various types of trepan designed to prevent sudden penetration into the brain; (also) the crown of a trepan (see crown n. 14).
