Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dun adj., bird n.
Etymology: < dun adj. + bird n.Earlier currency is perhaps implied by the surname Robertus Dunnebrid (1183); compare also Ranulph Dunfoul (1335), and the following isolated use of dun n.1 denoting some kind of duck or waterfowl:?c1475 Catholicon Anglicum (BL Add. 15562) f. 40 Dune [1483 BL Add. 89074 Dunne], vbi Duke.
English regional (chiefly Essex). Now historical.
Any of various dun-coloured ducks, esp. a (female) pochard, Aythya ferina.
